Completion of Vandyke Upper School
A combination of new build extensions and extensive refurbishments to adjacent schools in Central Bedfordshire to support a growing local population have now completed with our partner Morgan Sindall.
Cleverly slotted into redundant land on the existing school estate, these extensions provide much-needed facilities fit for the 21st century.
On Vandyke Upper School, we worked closely with an offside modular manufacturer to provide a new sixth form and science block in less than 12 months from brief to completion.
Next door at Gilbert Inglefield, a new teaching block and sports hall block provide community facilities in addition to twelve new classrooms, which are future-proofed for adaptation as reception classes should the school's intake change further in the future.
Built during the Covid-19 pandemic, we have worked with the contractor to adapt to new ways of working including video-based site inspections and using digital fabrication models from sub-contractors to provide assurances of accuracy and co-ordination.
Tim Carroll, Headteacher of Vandyke Upper School said, 'we never felt as if we were just another project. Architecture Initiative listened to our aspirations and alongside Morgan Sindall have delivered fantastic facilities that the school really needed to deliver the best curriculum for the children.'
On 9th September the students lay a time capsule to commemorate the opening of the building followed by speeches and cheers all round.
